Install the primary backfill in layers

- Before each stage of backfilling, pull up the shoring to the required height.
- Layer by layer, install and compact the backfill, including towards the trench wall.
- From the covering layer to 1 metre above the top of the pipe, only light- and medium-weight compaction equipment may be used (operating weight of up to 300 kg).
Principles:
- Use compaction equipment that is appropriate for the layer thickness.
- Compact in passes running inwards from each trench wall and overlapping in the middle of the trench.
- As a rule, use at least three passes to compact each layer of backfill.
- The backfill material must be free of foreign substances/objects (e.g. wood, waste, topsoil).

Do not use heavy compaction equipment (operating weight of over 300 kg) until the depth of the backfill above the top of the pipe is at least one metre!
