3 Backfilling the sides
- Before each stage of backfilling, pull up the shoring to the required height.
- Backfill the sides up to the top of the pipe layer by layer.
- Compact each layer in multiple passes.
- Direct the force of compaction towards the in-situ soil of the trench wall.
- Use only lightweight compaction equipment.
- Be sure the backfill material is free of stones and foreign substances/objects (e.g. wood, waste, topsoil).
Covering the pipe
4 Covering the pipe
Follow the instructions of the foreperson for the depth of the backfill layer covering the pipe.
Minimum depths:
- above the pipe shaft, > 15 cm
- above the pipe bell, > 10 cm
Recommended depth of the backfill covering layer in the guidelines (A 139):
– over 30 cm.
