Creating the lower bedding layer

- Raise the lower edge of the shoring to the installation height.
- Use backfill material and layer thickness as specified by the construction manager/foreperson.
- Be sure the backfill material is free of stones and foreign substances/objects (e.g. wood, waste, topsoil).

Creating the lower bedding layer
The lower bedding layer must be installed in the required thickness.
- Install backfill material across the width of the trench and over the length of the trench section and then distribute it according to the profile.
- Sufficiently compact the lower bedding layer (as specified by the construction manager/foreperson), especially against the unshored trench wall.
- Check the height (with laser, target plate, surveyor’s rod and level).
- Check the load-bearing capacity (using a light/dynamic drop-weight tester).

Loosen the bedding layer
Use a rake or shovel to slightly loosen the installed lower bedding layer beneath the planned pipe course (under the laser beam):
- approx. 3–5 cm wide
- approx. 2 cm deep.
Note:
Otherwise the bedding layer may only support the pipe along the line of its base, increasing the risk of pipe damage due to excessive load.
Creating the lower bedding layer

For socket pipes, create depressions under the locations of the pipe joints (pipe bells) in the lower bedding layer.
1 Loosened line in bedding layer along planned pipe course.
2 Depression (bell hole) at pipe joint (pipe bell) location.
